I been meaning to mention this for awhile and keep forgetting. Searchlight Nevada is located between me and Las Vegas. A trip I make periodically for medical visits and shopping. It is the childhood home of Senator Harry Reid. Wide spot in the road really, couple of cafes and gas stations, One casino I think. Turn off to go to Lake Mohave (great fishing).
Anyway I found out awhile back that they are going to build giant windmills (taller than the Statue of Liberty) over a large area of desert to generate wind power. Now I won't deny that it is a perfect place for wind power, it blows like hell there all the time, but the size of the project is enormous and will take years of construction and dust and trucks and concrete and more dust. A good thing I suppose but it makes me sad.
Here is a link to the article my friends over at Mojave Desert Blog posted. I guess the need for newer more reliable electrical power is more important that the tranquil beauty of the desert being destroyed but I will be sad to see it go. Better than a nuclear reactor in my back yard I guess.
Here is a picture of what the area looks like now.
That is Spirit Mountain in the background. I hope the desert lasts till I am gone. It was the most beautiful place on earth and I called it home. All I got for now. Mrs. Rat wants to go to the store.
